Parental Rights & Options Information Form

During the 89th Texas Legislative Session, lawmakers passed Senate Bill 12, which requires schools to obtain parental consent each year before providing certain routine services. These include physical health care through our school nurses, mental health support through our school counselors, and student participation in school-based clubs.

This law applies to all district- or campus-sponsored clubs, such as academic teams, interest-based groups, service organizations, and extracurricular activity clubs. Examples of routine services that require consent include first aid, short-term counseling, and vision or hearing screenings.

Parental Engagement Portal - SB 12

Texas Education Code § 26.0071 requires school districts to adopt a parental engagement policy. Effective September 1, 2025, this portal lets parents and guardians of enrolled students share comments with campus or district administrators and the Board of Trustees.

What to use this form for:

General comments about your child’s school experience or district operations
Suggestions or feedback you want leadership to consider

What not to use this form for:

Urgent safety concerns or emergencies (call 911)
Student-specific issues, discipline, or services (contact your campus)
Formal grievances or appeals (use our grievance process)
Public records requests (use our records request portal)

Include your contact information if you would like a response. We review submissions during normal business hours and route them to the appropriate staff.

Note: submissions may be public under the Texas Public Information Act.

Inclement Weather Procedures

At Slaton ISD, the safety and well-being of our students are our highest priorities. During periods of inclement weather, we carefully evaluate conditions to determine whether schools can safely operate.

Decision-Making Process
Decisions regarding school closures or schedule adjustments are guided by information from multiple trusted sources, including:

The National Weather Service
Local law enforcement and transportation officials
Road assessments conducted by district staff
Other reliable sources

When assessing weather-related risks, the district considers factors such as:

Road viability
Snow and ice accumulation
Temperature and wind chill
Forecasts for continued or worsening conditions

Announcing Schedule Changes
If inclement weather requires a change to the school schedule, updates will be communicated as promptly as possible:

Timeline for Weather Decisions

Evening or Overnight Weather:
When severe weather occurs overnight, decisions are made by 6 a.m. the following morning. For forecasts predicting significant weather in advance, decisions may be made the evening prior.
After-School Programs and Events:
All after-school programs will be evaluated based on current conditions and may be canceled or postponed.
