Welcome to the Slaton High School Electrical Technology Program

Slaton High School’s Electrical Technology Program offers students a comprehensive pathway to gaining valuable hands-on experience in electrical technology. Our program is designed to prepare students for a successful career in electrical work by providing them with the necessary skills and knowledge. Additionally, the program allows students to accumulate recommended hours towards their electrical license, giving them a head start in their professional journey.

Did you know that there are four different basic types of electrician licenses in Texas? Each of these licenses involves a different level of experience and specific training or areas of expertise.

  • Journeyman electrician:8,000 hours of work as an apprentice electrician under a Master Electrician licensed in the state of Texas, documented in an experience verification form. Renewal is annual, along with completing four hours of continuing education training.
  • Master electrician: Complete at least 12,000 hours of work under a Master Electrician license in Texas; have held a journeyman electrician license for at least two years and pass a master electrician exam. Renewal is annual, along with completing four hours of continuing education training.
  • Residential wireman: 4,000 hours of experience (two years) as an apprentice electrician under the supervision of a Residential Wiremen or Master Electrician licensed in the state of Texas, documented in an experience verification form. Renewal of this license is annual.
  • Electrical Contractor: Has the proper licensing, including a master electrician license (or hiring someone with that license), and holds workers’ compensation insurance.

 

Electrical Technology 1 Course Overview

Electrical Technology 1 is a first-year course that introduces students to the basics of electrical technology and home wiring. It prepares students to perform competently at an apprentice level in electrical work settings and handle home electrical projects safely.

  • Focus Areas: Safety practices, basic electrical principles, home wiring techniques, and tool handling.
  • Objectives: Gain foundational knowledge and skills, including safety protocols, electrical calculations, and the use of hand and power tools.

Licensing Hours

By participating in Slaton High School’s Electrical Technology Program, students can accumulate the recommended hours required for an electrical license. This opportunity provides a significant advantage as students move forward in their electrical careers, allowing them to meet licensing requirements and gain a competitive edge in the job market.

Electrical Technology 2 Course Overview

Electrical Technology 2 is a double-blocked, second-year course that emphasizes hands-on training. Students will work on various electrical projects throughout the campus, applying advanced techniques and project management skills.

  • Focus Areas: Advanced electrical projects, project planning and execution, complex systems, and professional skills.
  • Objectives: Engage in practical projects, develop advanced skills, and accumulate recommended hours towards an electrical license.
