Election Day at CTE: Every Vote Counts!
Election Day at Cathelene Thomas Elementary was a special experience for Mrs. Wagner's 2nd-grade class! Students had the chance to vote on their favorite food – hot dogs, hamburgers, or pizza. After a lively "campaign," pizza emerged as the winner! But more than a tasty choice, this exercise was a meaningful lesson in the importance of citizenship and the voting process.
Mrs. Wagner used this classroom election to teach her students about good citizenship, the significance of voting, and why every single vote counts. Through this hands-on activity, students learned that each individual has a voice, and that voice matters – whether it's choosing a favorite snack or selecting leaders who represent our communities.
Participating in this mini-election helped the 2nd graders understand a few key principles:
- The Power of a Vote: Just like in a real election, every student's choice impacted the outcome. They saw firsthand that their votes made a difference in the final result.
- The Election Process: From casting ballots to tallying votes, the students experienced each step of an election. They learned the importance of fair play and respecting others' choices.
- Citizenship in Action: Voting isn’t just about making choices for ourselves – it’s about contributing to our community. By participating, students saw how making decisions together strengthens bonds and fosters a sense of belonging.
These kinds of activities show students that, as future citizens, they play a vital role in shaping the world around them. Voting is a powerful way to make voices heard, and it’s a right and responsibility everyone should exercise. Learning this lesson early gives students an appreciation for the process and builds a foundation for lifelong civic engagement.
At Slaton ISD, we believe in shaping well-rounded individuals ready to make a positive impact. Great things are happening here, and Election Day at CTE was a perfect example of how even small activities can create big learning moments.
