Squishy Fun!!!
Mrs. Hamlyn’s first-grade class had a memorable hands-on experience that combined reading, science, and just a little bit of mess! They dove into an interactive lesson all about pumpkins—reading books, learning about how they grow, and finally, cutting open a real pumpkin to see what’s inside.
As the students gathered around the pumpkin, you could feel the excitement in the room. But nothing compared to their reactions when it was time to reach inside and scoop out the seeds and stringy pulp! Some kids looked thrilled; others pulled funny faces as they tentatively plunged their hands in.
After their messy exploration, each student wrote about what they read and experienced. They described the pumpkin’s outside texture, the cool, squishy inside, and even what it smelled like! This activity strengthened their reading and listening skills, helped them follow instructions, and encouraged cooperative learning as they shared their discoveries and observations with each other.
It was a day of fun and laughter, and it showed the students that learning can be an adventure. Through activities like this, Mrs. Hamlyn’s class is building memories—and skills—that will stay with them long after they leave first grade.
It’s a great day to be a Tiger!
