Slaton High School’s FCCLA Chapter students advanced at the Regional level in February and spent last week at State Competition in Dallas, where they competed in Culinary Arts, Cupcake Presentation, Interior Design, Chapter Service Project Portfolio, and Food Innovations.
FCCLA – Family, Community, and Career Leaders of America - is a student organization that promotes student leadership, ownership in student actions and responsibilities, and community service. They represented our school and the community of Slaton well!
Students who competed and served on the State Conference Connections crew: Emiley Garcia, Annie Kelly, Isaiah Chapa, MJ Wallace, Destiney Mendez, Laz Trotty, Wyatt Ross, Kaden Jeffcoat, and Carmen Petty.
(Details of their competitions below)
Laz Trotty and Destiny Mendez (Chapter Service Project Portfolio) designed a project to provide bags of necessities and hygiene items - with positive messages in each bag - to put in bathrooms at our high school and junior high for students who lack knowledge of hygiene or lack financial or family support for basic needs. They plan to actually do this in our schools.
MJ Wallace (Cupcake Presentation) designed cupcakes that honor her grandparents rose garden. (Wish I had a pic of her display. It was beautiful! She had to display refined skill and technique.)
Isaiah Chapa competed in a skills contest – Culinary Arts - made maple butter thyme chicken with rice pilaf, sautéed green beans, and an Oreo crust ganache tart. He had 1 hour to present 2 plates for judging.
Annie Kelly and Emiley Garcia competed in Interior Design, where they redesigned a home for a couple in Texas who has a son with autism and who needed extra office space and a safe, appropriate/ interactive/comfortable family home.
Wyatt Ross and Kaden Jeffcoat competed in Food Innovations, where they designed a low sodium, heart healthy meal kit for grocery stores and put together a really interesting presentation. I attached the carneguisada and squash recipe they designed - it is very, very good.
Carmen Petty and MJ also were on the State Connections team, helping document the conference in photos.
